The AHRC Network e-Voices: Redressing Marginality brings together a global network of academics and practitioners to explore the theme of marginalisation and how digital media can be used by marginalised groups to make their voices heard within and beyond the borders of their communities and promote social inclusion.

The network aims at sharing knowledge of the strategies and modalities that prove successful in fighting marginalisation in three countries, in which marginalised groups have adopted emblematic ways to use digital media to overcome inequalities and marginalisation, and to start processes of cultural transformation: Brazil, Kenya and Syria.

In particular, the network is going to explore three case studies: how favela residents in Brazil are using digital media to foster community engagement and active citizenship; how Kenyan artists are using digital tools to promote a dialogue around human rights and power structures; and how development organisations working with displaced populations in Syria are using digital technologies to foster peace and reconciliation in the country.

e-Voices: Redressing Marginality brings together academics in diverse fields of Media and Communication (Animation, Digital Media for Development, Social Communication, Political Communication) and practitioners in Kenya, Syria and Brazil who are or have been engaged in using digital communication strategies to end or combat marginalisation. The network explores three in-depth case studies, in which high-risk, marginalised communities use digital media as a tool to overcome their marginalisation. In particular, the network will document:

  • Favela residents in Brazil and their use of digital media to push for active citizenship and participation in their country’s political system.
  • Use of artistic strategies in Kenya whereby artists can re-present marginalised groups, such as the LGBT, migrant or the disabled communities, through storytelling and visual aesthetic forms to speak powerfully about their lives and identities, document their everyday experiences, and their uses of digital spaces and technologies to disseminate these.
  • Displaced groups and refugees in Syria, who are using digital media to promote peace and reconciliation in their devastated country.

The network will promote discussion among members and participants, in order to:

  1. Report emblematic uses of digital media to document everyday experiences of marginalised groups in order to build bridges to the wider, international public sphere;
  2. Track the process from community building to communication, to gaining a share of voice and having impact;
  3. Identify similarities and peculiarities of this process in each in-depth case study;
  4. Reflect on ethically sound methodologies to approach marginalised and at risk groups, to collect data and identify good practices without exposing them to the risk of further harm;
  5. Identify trends and opportunities for global practitioners, activists, and development institutions to craft services and content based on end-users most common practices and applications of digital media.

Professor Michael Wilmore’s academic career spans more than twenty-five years, several disciplines, and positions both in the UK and Australia. He is currently Executive Dean of the Faculty of Media and Communication. He has been an active researcher on a number of projects funded through competitive research grants. Each has involved extensive interdisciplinary and industry collaborations, ranging from media organisations in Nepal to the antenatal department of a large hospital. His research interests primarily concern development and health communication, but he has also completed educational research and a project on fieldwork practices in archaeology, which was his first area of study as an undergraduate at the University of Exeter.

Dr Karen Fowler-Watt is Head of the School of Journalism, English and Communication. A former BBC journalist, who worked in Radio 4 News and Current Affairs as an output editor on The World at One and PM and The World this Weekend, Karen was a field producer in the Middle East, covering the Gulf Crisis and War in 1990/1 and producing news output from Moscow, Europe, Northern Ireland and the United States, with a stint as Washington bureau producer for Clinton’s US Presidential campaign.  In 2013, Karen was awarded her doctorate entitled, The Storytellers tell Their Stories: The Journalist as Educator by the University of Southampton. She works with the Salzburg Media Academy and is interested in reporting conflict, autobiographical journalism and digital storytelling, as well as reporting marginalised voices.

Dr Anna Feigenbaum is Principal Academic in Digital Storytelling. Before joining the department of Journalism, English and Communication, she was a Lecturer in Media and Politics at BU from 2013-2015. Prior to this, she taught at Richmond, the American University in London and held fellow positions at the Rutgers University Center for Historical Analysis, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the Institute for Historical Research at University of London. She graduated from McGill University in 2008 with a PhD in Communication Studies.  Beyond the university, she runs a variety of workshops on data storytelling for local businesses, NGOs and community groups. She also provides consultancy for campaigns, archives and museum exhibitions related to her research.
